A few days ago, I had one of those busy days where I barely had time to eat properly. I skipped through lunch and kept working on different things, and before I knew it, it was already around 8 PM. I was originally thinking of just making some instant ramen, but for some reason, I kept craving meat. So I ended up opening a delivery app.
After scrolling through the menu for a while, I found tteokgalbi. Usually, I think of tteokgalbi as something you eat at a restaurant, not at home, but the reviews looked pretty good, so I decided to give it a try. Normally, delivery tteokgalbi costs around 12,000 to 18,000 KRW per person, and if you order it as a set meal, it can easily go up to around 20,000 KRW or more. The one I ordered was around that price range, and the portion looked decent.
It arrived in about 40 minutes, which was faster than I expected. As soon as I opened the package, I could smell that smoky grilled aroma, and right away I thought, “This might actually be pretty good.”
There were three large pieces of tteokgalbi, along with pickled onions, salad, and dipping sauce. The packaging was simple but neat. When I took the first bite, I was honestly surprised by how juicy it was. The outside had a slightly sweet glaze, while the inside was soft and tender. It also had a subtle charcoal flavor that paired really well with rice.
As I kept eating, I suddenly started craving soju. I originally planned not to drink that night, but it was hard to resist with grilled meat like this. In the end, I grabbed a bottle of soju from the fridge and poured myself a glass. Taking a bite of tteokgalbi followed by a sip of soju turned out to be a surprisingly good combination. The clean, sharp taste of the soju balanced out the sweetness of the meat really well.
Before I knew it, I had already finished more than half a bowl of rice. With the soju, my appetite came back even stronger. Three pieces felt a little small, but it was enough to leave me satisfied without feeling too full. At the time, it was just a random meal I ordered without much thought, but somehow it stayed in my mind.

A few days later, I found myself thinking about it again. That’s when I thought, “This would actually make a pretty good blog post.” It was just a simple delivery meal, but it turned out to be much better than I expected. Plus, I realized tteokgalbi is a great dish to introduce to foreigners who want to try authentic Korean food.
Tteokgalbi is one of Korea’s traditional meat dishes and is said to have originated from royal court cuisine during the Joseon Dynasty. Traditionally, the meat was removed from beef short ribs, minced, seasoned, and then shaped back onto the rib bone before grilling. Even though the word “tteok” means rice cake, there is actually no rice cake in the dish. The name comes from the soft and chewy texture of the minced meat, which resembles rice cake.
In the past, it was often served during holidays, celebrations, or for special guests. The tteokgalbi from Damyang, South Korea and Gwangju, South Korea is especially well known. These days, there are many modern versions made with pork, beef, or a mix of both, and its smoky, sweet-savory flavor has made it popular not only among Koreans but also among visitors from around the world.
It’s a dish that feels easy to enjoy, but at the same time gives you a taste of Korean tradition. I think the next time I start craving meat again, this will definitely be one of the first things I order.
