Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil in Seoul, A Street Where a Cup of Coffee Turns Day into Night
Today, I visited Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong, Seoul for the first time in a while.
As soon as I got off at Sinsa Station and started walking into the street, I could immediately feel that the atmosphere here was different.
Even though it sits right in the middle of Gangnam, it somehow feels less chaotic and more relaxed than the rest of the city.
During the daytime, Garosu-gil feels especially beautiful.
Sunlight filters through the tall trees lining both sides of the street, and the reflections on the café windows make the whole area feel brighter and warmer.
People walk by carrying shopping bags, while others head into cafés for brunch with friends.
As I walked, I started to understand why this street became so famous.
Garosu-gil has long been known as one of Seoul’s trendiest streets.
It became a place where new cafés opened first, fashion pop-up stores appeared, and stylish concept shops gathered, naturally turning it into one of the city’s trendsetting spots.
But Garosu-gil did not become what it is overnight.
It was originally a quiet residential area with small local shops.
In the late 1990s, unique cafés and designer boutiques slowly began moving in.
The ginkgo trees lining the street became its signature look, and people naturally started calling it “Garosu-gil,” which literally means “Tree-lined Street.”
By the early 2000s, young Seoul designers, independent brands, and small galleries started gathering here.
As social media grew, the street’s aesthetic atmosphere and café culture quickly spread online, helping Garosu-gil become one of Seoul’s most iconic neighborhoods.
That’s probably why walking here feels different.
It’s not just a pretty street.
It feels like a place built over time, layer by layer, with its own history and atmosphere.
What makes it even more special is how different it feels from other busy areas.
Unlike Hongdae, which feels energetic and loud,
or Myeong-dong, which is packed with tourists,
Garosu-gil feels calmer, more stylish, and much easier to enjoy at your own pace.
Eventually, I stepped into a café that caught my eye.
I sat by the window, ordered an iced coffee, and opened my laptop.
Around me, there were people working quietly on their laptops, others sitting alone with earphones, and small groups chatting over coffee.
Inside the café, soft music was playing and the smell of coffee filled the space.
The sound of the espresso machine, cups being set down, and quiet conversations somehow felt comforting.
Every now and then, I looked out the window.
Couples walked hand in hand, people laughed while taking photos, and some sat on benches just resting.
It all felt like scenes from a movie.
Before I realized it, the sky had started getting darker.
The warm lights inside the café felt even cozier, and outside, the bright street slowly transformed into evening.
Walking out of the café was probably my favorite moment.
Garosu-gil looked completely different from how it had in the afternoon.
Store signs lit up, warm café lights spilled through the windows, and the whole street glowed softly.
The small lights wrapped around the trees and the storefront lighting blended together, making the street feel deeper and more alive.
Couples walked slower now, taking photos of each other or simply holding hands and smiling.
If daytime felt clean and bright, nighttime felt much more emotional.
Soft music drifted out from the stores, and the smell of coffee, food, and the sound of people laughing mixed together to create that warm Seoul night atmosphere.
Garosu-gil is beautiful during the day,
but personally, I think the best way to experience it is to spend time in a café and walk out just as evening begins.
That moment when the bright afternoon slowly turns into a warm night
is when you can truly feel the real charm of Garosu-gil.

It usually refers to the main street stretching from Exit 8 toward the Apgujeong area.

From Gangnam Station, Apgujeong, or Cheongdam, it takes around 10–15 minutes by taxi.
If you want to feel Seoul’s stylish yet relaxed side,
Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong is one of the best streets to explore at a slower pace.
