It’s best to install Kakao T before you leave for Korea. That way, once you land, you can use it immediately.

To use Kakao T, you usually need:

• A mobile phone number
• Internet connection (SIM card or eSIM)
• Kakao account (recommended)

Many travelers sign up using KakaoTalk first. That makes the login process easier. Once logged in, you can open the Taxi section right away.

For payment, you can either:

• Pay the driver directly
• Add your card inside the app

For most tourists, paying directly is easier. Many Korean taxis accept international credit cards now, but carrying some cash is still smart just in case.

2. Basic Taxi Fare in Korea (Very Important)

Before using Kakao T, it helps to understand how taxi fares work in Korea. This is something many travelers don’t know.

In Seoul, the standard taxi fare starts at:

• ₩4,800 base fare
• Covers the first 1.6 km

After that:

• About ₩100 every 131 meters
• Or every 30 seconds in slow traffic

This means traffic matters. A ride that looks short can cost more if roads are crowded. This surprises many tourists.

Late-night surcharges:

• 10 PM – 11 PM → around 20% extra
• 11 PM – 2 AM → around 40% extra
• 2 AM – 4 AM → around 20% extra

If you use Kakao T and request faster matching, there can also be an extra calling fee:

• ₩1,000 – ₩5,000 depending on demand

This is called a “call fee.” During heavy rain or weekend nights, this can increase. Normal standard calling often has no extra fee.

3. How to Call a Taxi with Kakao T

Once you open Kakao T, press the Taxi icon. The app will detect your location. Always check it carefully. Sometimes in busy areas, the pickup point can be slightly wrong.

Then enter your destination. English works for many famous places, but Korean is often more accurate.

Then choose your taxi:

• General Taxi (best for most tourists)
• Blue Taxi (slightly better condition)
• Venti (bigger taxi for luggage)
• Black (premium and expensive)

General Taxi is usually enough. It’s what most locals use.

How long does it take to arrive?

• Downtown Seoul → usually 3 to 7 minutes
• Normal residential areas → 5 to 10 minutes
• Late night → 10 to 20 minutes

If the driver accepts, they usually wait about 3 to 5 minutes after arriving. If you don’t show up, the driver may cancel. Sometimes a cancellation fee can apply.

4. Taking Kakao Taxi from Incheon Airport to Seoul

A lot of travelers use Kakao T right after landing. At Incheon Airport, this is easy because taxi pickup zones are clearly marked.

After baggage claim, go outside to the designated taxi area. Set your pickup point there. Don’t call it from inside the terminal. The driver cannot stop there.

From Incheon Airport to Seoul:

• Hongdae → ₩45,000 – ₩60,000
• Myeongdong → ₩55,000 – ₩70,000
• Gangnam → ₩65,000 – ₩90,000

Important: Highway tolls are usually added separately. This can be around:

• ₩6,600 – ₩8,000 extra

Late-night surcharge may also apply. So if you land after midnight, your final cost may be much higher.

Travel time:

• Hongdae → 45–60 minutes
• Myeongdong → 60–70 minutes
• Gangnam → 70–90 minutes

If you have 3 or more large suitcases, Venti is highly recommended. A normal taxi becomes very tight.

5. Is Kakao Taxi Safe?

Yes. Very safe. Korea’s taxi system is highly regulated. And Kakao T adds extra security because your trip is recorded.
